Week Three: Lower Anxiety - The Somatic Therapy Series
Updated: 4 hours ago
Practice #2 : Ujjayi Breathe
उज्जायी : One who is uplifted
What is it? Ujjayi Breathe is a foundational yogic breathing technique that is simple yet powerful and deepens our conscious breath. It is excellent in releasing tensions in your body, to increase focus and concentration and to cultivate awareness. Ujjayi builds heat, encourages calm and focus and awakens the Visshuddha Chakra (throat chakra). Breathing gently through the nose while adding a slight constriction in the back of the throat creates a soft. With this contraction, the breath becomes audible.
How to:
Inhale deeply through the mouth as if using a straw.
With the mouth in an O shape, exhale completely while making a soft, warm "HA" sound, as if attempting to fog up a mirror right in front of you.
Time: 5-10 rounds of breath
Benefits: Slow, controlled breathing can lower anxiety. The sound of the breath can quiet mental chatter. Practicing before bed can ease you into a restful sleep. Expands lung capacity and trains your body to take deeper, more intentional breaths. Slow your heart rate and support a balanced cardiovascular system.
Notice: What do you notice in your body before and after the practice?
