The Somatic Therapy Series - Week 5: Balance Nervous System
Practice #4 : Anulom Vilom
अनुलोम-विलोम : Anuloma "with the grain," and Viloma "against the grain"
What is it? Anulom Vilom (alternative nostril breathing) clears and balances the left (Ida- cooling) and right (pingala, heating) currents of the spine (sushumna nadi). This is a meditative practice that calms and stabilize the nervous system, to find ease and peace.
How to:
Close your right nostril with your right thumb.
Inhale slowly and deeply through your left nostril until your lungs are full.
Close your left nostril with your ring finger, release your thumb, and exhale slowly through your right nostril.
Inhale through your right nostril
Close it with your thumb, release the ring finger, and exhale through your left nostril.
This is one round.
Time: Try setting a timer for 2 minutes and increase to 5 minutes over time.
Benefits: Calms the mind and lowers anxiety levels by balancing the autonomic nervous system. Enhances lung capacity. Clears mental fog and improves concentration. Promotes a healthy heart rate and helps maintain balanced blood pressure. Supports deep relaxation.
Notice: What do you notice in your body before and after the practice?
